The Band
Making music late into the night- nothing new- but it doesn’t matter because this feels so good.
Fatbook is a collective of influences, backgrounds, tastes, personalities, and the people that
those emerge from. This is an arrangement of ideas and sounds that seem familiar, but put
together with a unique sense of context. Fatbook is new. Forming
within the academic musical environment of the Lawrence University Conservatory in the winter
of 2007, Fatbook became a way for these different musicians to take their informed approach and
break out of “the conservatory” with something natural and creative- move toward something unbound…
and a little more hot.
The front of this group is not about whining for your interest; Harjinder leads the group with a
calm confidence that knows the music has your attention already. The soul found in Harjinder Bedi
and Ted Toussaint’s vocal chemistry comes with ten years of singing together, since the folk songs
of their boychoir days. The rhythm section is nothing typical as it moves from funky rhythms to
hip-hop back beats and lets out some bite with rock energy. Meanwhile, it won’t escape the
influence of a reggae guitar, classical piano, or a love for Brazilian bateria. The horn section
helps Fatbook call in its sound, bringing an energy and range of colors that push the band
to a different level. The elements of the band are all pulled together with a solid movement
to create fresh song, however that comes out.
Live shows are where this began, and that’s where it will go. This is music to make you move.
After winning the award for best pop/rock/blues band of 2009 by DownBeat Magazine, Fatbook has
started to play out more and more. An independent CD release in 2009 will help spread the word.
These seven young men don’t want to just craft art for you, they want nothing more than to create
something with you.
…do it for the love of music
